Kids on a roller coaster in the sunsetThe Smoky Mountains are gearing up for a spring filled with events and activities that locals and vacationers can enjoy throughout the season. Though there is no shortage of things to do in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, there's little more exciting than a visit to Tennessee's top theme park, Dollywood.

After closing in January to prepare for the 2014 season, Pigeon  Forge attraction Dollywood will be opening on March 22. Since transitioning from Silver Dollar City to Dollywood, the attraction has had 27 successful seasons, and 2014 is looking no different.

Since 1986, the 130 acre theme park has expanded by opening new rides and restaurants each year. The property has more than 40 rides and nearly 25 restaurants, not to mention the entertainment and shows that are spread throughout the park.

Each year, Dollywood hosts five festivals that run through the entire season, beginning with the Festival of Nations.

It is the country's first dual-launch coaster, launching riders both forward and back in one ride.
