Stop by a Visitor Center

Clingmans Dome is one of the most popular places for visitors, especially in the fall season because the leaves change from green to bright reds and yellows. If you stop by a visitor center, you will be able to learn much more about Clingmans Dome before you begin your adventure. The Clingmans Dome Visitor Center will have a small booklet about the Clingmans Dome area. In the booklet, visitors will find a list of all of the sights that can be seen from the top of the overlook.

Prepare for the Weather

No matter what time of year it is, Clingmans Dome will always be cooler than the lower elevations. It is helpful to wear layers of clothing when you plan to spend time at Clingmans Dome. Items like jackets, rain ponchos, sweatshirts, and sunglasses are great for your visit to the highest point in Tennessee. It also doesn't hurt to pack a few extra items like gloves and a scarf during the fall.

Wear Comfortable Footwear for the Hike

It is best to wear boots or athletic shoes for your trip to Clingmans Dome. The trail to the summit is paved, but it's quite steep. The hike only lasts about one-half of a mile, it gains 330 feet in elevation and takes most people about 30 minutes to get to the top.
