The Donut Friar has been an institution in Gatlinburg since 1970! Located in The Village shopping complex behind the Pancake Pantry, this legendary bakery is famous for its irresistible donuts. Made fresh each morning, the Friar’s donuts are melt-in-your-mouth good and come in a variety of flavors, including Bavarian cream, coconut, and chocolate.
In addition to its signature donuts, the Friar is also known for its cinnamon bread, puff pastries, danishes, cinnamon rolls, and cookies. The smell of the freshly baked goodies (especially the cinnamon bread) is guaranteed to draw you inside the shop. The Donut Friar opens each morning at 5 a.m., so early risers can start their day with a treat and a wonderful cappuccino or latte.
Please keep in mind that the Donut Friar only accepts cash. If you need to use the store’s onsite ATM, you’ll receive a free $2 drink to offset the fee for withdrawing money.
2. Ole Smoky Candy Kitchen
Ole Smoky Candy Kitchen isn’t technically a bakery, but it is one of the best places to go when you’re craving something sweet! This shop was founded in 1950 by a couple who wanted to provide tourists with wholesome homemade candies. The best part was that the candy was made in full view of people passing by. Candy makers could be seen stirring copper kettles while feeding taffy into hypnotic machines. Today, Ole Smoky Candy Kitchen still provides tourists with the same delicious candy. With more than 20 different flavors of taffy, you’ll feel like you have endless options of treats to choose from. Candy isn’t the only thing you can find there, though! The shop has delicious, homemade fudge, brittles, caramels and more. It’s one of the most popular sweet shops in downtown Gatlinburg!
