There is nowhere else in the world quite like Gatlinburg, TN! Situated on the border of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, our city is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the United States. In addition to its wonderful location and beautiful scenery, Gatlinburg is also home to some truly one of a kind attractions. To help you make the most of your getaway, Stony Brook Cabins has put together a guide to five things you will only find in Gatlinburg.
1. A Mini Golf Course On Top of a Mountain
Hillbilly Golf takes putt putt to a whole new level! This attraction is home to two different 18 hole courses that are both located at the top of a mountain. To get to the start of the courses, visitors take an awesome tram ride that takes you up 300 feet to the mountain’s peak. Themed around the stereotypical hillbilly way of life, the courses feature tractors, moonshine stills, outhouses, and other fun obstacles. Please note that although Hillbilly Golf was briefly closed during the winter, it is expected to reopen during the first weekend of March 2017.
2. Moonshine Distilleries Galore
Many years ago, the Smoky Mountains were populated by moonshiners, who would secretly distill illicit whiskey under the light of the moon. Today, the tradition of making white lightnin’ is alive and well, but now it’s %100 legal! Gatlinburg, TN is home to more moonshine distilleries than anywhere else in the country. These distilleries offer fun tastings for a small fee and frequently host live music performances. With flavors like Apple Pie, Sweet Tea, and even Peanut Butter and Jelly, you’re sure to find a type of moonshine that you’ll want to bring home. Gatlinburg’s distilleries include:
3. A Ski Resort in Tennessee
Gatlinburg is the only place you can go skiing in the state of Tennessee! Our city is home to the Ober Gatlinburg Ski Area & Amusement Park, which offers superb skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing during the winter months. Even though Gatlinburg usually doesn’t get much snow, Ober’s high powered snow machines make sure that the mountains always have fresh powder.
In the off season, Ober offers a number of popular family activities, including a mountain coaster, alpine slide, chairlift ride, mini golf course, arcade, indoor ice skating rink, and even more fun things to do. The best way to get to Ober is to take the Aerial Tramway, a cable car ride that leaves from downtown Gatlinburg and offers breathtaking views of the Smoky Mountains.
4. The Nation’s Largest Group of Independent Artisans
Gatlinburg is home to the single biggest group of independent artisans and craftspeople in the United States. The work of these artists is showcased in the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community, an 8 mile loop located off of the East Parkway. Visitors to the Arts & Crafts Community will find a wonderful collection of shops, galleries, and studios filled with all kinds of handmade items. Some of the most popular things you can buy in the Arts & Crafts Community include pottery, paintings, jewelry, quilts, baskets, wood carvings, and candles.
5. The World’s Most Creative Hot Dogs
Smoky Mountain Shakes-N-Dawgs makes hot dog creations that you won’t find anywhere else. One of their best sellers is the Southern Fried Dawg, a hot dog that is twice dipped in a batter made from Cheez-It cracker crumbs, deep fried, and served on a toasted roll with a special sauce and shredded cheddar cheese. Another famous hot dog from the restaurant is the Moonshine Dawg, which is marinated in genuine Tennessee moonshine before it hits the grill. In addition to its famous hot dogs, Smoky Mountain Shakes-N-Dawgs also offers delicious milkshakes made with Amish buttercream ice cream.
